THE 2010 JAMES W. WHITE LECTURELoving God and Loving Neighbor inthe Mystical Tradition
Bernard McGinn
“You shall
love the Lord your God with your whole heart and your whole soul and your whole
mind,… and you shall love your neighbor like yourself” (Deut. 6:5; Mt. 22:36-40).
This biblical injunction is at the center of the teaching of both the Old and
the New Testaments. But what does it mean to love God? What forms of love can
be directed to the supreme being whom we cannot see? And how are we to express
our love for our neighbor? How are love of God, love of self, and love of
neighbor related? These and similar issues have been discussed by believers
over the centuries, not least by the mystics, that is, those who have been seen
as enjoying a special form of direct contact with God. This lecture and
workshop are designed to present the teaching of the mystics on these
issues.
