NOVEMBER 2008 WORSHIP
2008 - 2009 Worship & Program Year Theme:
Sustainable Faith
"Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit." November 2 – All Saints/All Souls Sunday Holy Communion is celebrated at both services as the chancel is decorated with photos of loved ones who have died. Members of the Prayer Shawl ministry knit on the chancel in an attitude of prayer. Rev. Franklin preaches a sermon on Psalm 90 entitled “The Sum of Our Days.”
November 2 – Installation of Rev. Jacque Franklin In the Founders’ Room at 4:00, Rev. Franklin will be installed by the Southeastern Association as our Associate Minister. The children’s choir presents a musical offering and Rev. Leanne Hadley preaches.
November 9 – 26th Sunday After Pentecost Church member and composer Paul Schwotzer provides music for services this morning. Rev. Broadbent preaches a sermon on Amos 5 and I Thessalonians entitled “Not What We’d Expect.”
November 16 – Stewardship Celebration Sunday Today we celebrate the culmination of our 6-week Stewardship Pledge Drive to enable the vital ministries and mission outreach of our local congregation in 2009. Jenny Chapman shares a reprise of her original song, “On Earth as in Heaven” and Rev. Broadbent preaches a sermon on Matthew 24:14-30 entitled “Entering into the Joy.”
November 23 – Reign of Christ/Thanksgiving Sunday On this “New Year’s Eve” of the Christian calendar, we pause to give thanks. Our texts, Ezekiel 34 and Matthew 25, imagine the shepherd who separates the sheep from the goats based on the demands of justice. Rev. Broadbent’s sermon explores “The Bounds of Thanksgiving.”
November 23 – Interfaith Thanksgiving Service All are invited to a Community Service of “Thanksgiving and Unity” at 4:00 at Temple Shalom, 1523 E. Monument.
November 30 – 1st Sunday in Advent Today is the first Sunday in the Christian year. We light the first of our Advent candles and pray for a “Sustainable Peace.” Members of the Confirmation Class of 2009 plan and prepare the services, including the sermon.
November 30 – Advent Taize Service of Healing At 4:00, our annual Advent Taize Service of Healing will include chanting, silence, and readings. Healing with anointing oil will be offered and participants may place prayer scrolls on a special tree. At a time of year when loss can feel especially hard, this service provides safe space to pay attention, to grieve, and to heal.
Coming in December…
Sustainable Hope, Joy, and Love; Weekly Thursday Taize services, the Christmas Mystery, and Christmas Eve services at 4:00, 6:00 and 11:00.
