2008 Micah 6 Award Recipients
Linda LeMieux – Nominated by
Janet Carpenter
Linda’s leadership at FCC
since she joined in 1997- her service on the board heading up the Missions
Council and its numerous committees, FCC’s 125th Anniversary
Committee & church cornerstone project, as the liaison to the Rocky
Mountain Conference, and promotion of the God is Still Speaking Initiative –
are activities that exemplify quiet accomplishment and humility. Linda has
stood a witness to the desire for peace, justice and equal treatment of all
people through her community involvement, especially her long-standing work with
the Colorado Springs Branch of the NAACP, where she has served on the Executive
Committee, as Treasurer, and Co-Chair of the Education Committee over the past
five years. Linda strives to ensure equity and educational excellence for all
students. Her work monitoring school districts in the city reflects this
commitment. She has recently bee selected by the D-11 Board to serve on the
School Configuration & Use Study Committee.
Guy McPherson – Nominated by
Ruth Roland & Christy Kessler
Guy’s leadership in forming
and heading up Out Loud: The Colorado Springs Men’s Chorus demonstrates “the
transformative power of music, mutual respect and love.” Many at FCC can
remember their first performance – eight vocalists, with Guy accompanying on
piano – for an Advent service in 2005, singing “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Seasons
of Love.” Out Loud’s initial public performance with 23 men, here at FCC in
April 2006 – to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd with standing room only – and the
video that Guy facilitated of the Chorus discussing that experience exemplify
the extraordinary possibilities of making a ministry of our church an
outstanding, inclusive witness to our community.
Guy’s service to Out Loud,
now with over 50 singers, the Rocky Mountain Arts Association and, more
recently, MOSAIC Youth Chorus, which brings together “GLBTQ&Q young people
and their straight allies,” is a testimony to his skills, diplomacy and love
for others.
Marilyn Robbins – Nominated by
Jenny Finn
Marilyn describes herself as
a life-long “fiber person,” so when she heard about the nationwide Prayer Shawl
Ministry shortly after joining FCC in 2005, she became enthusiastic about
starting one here. While Marilyn provided the leadership to initiate this new
ministry, she emphasizes that it is truly a collaborative effort, one that has
grown to twenty-eight shawl makers in less than three years, Marilyn sees
creating the shawls as “applied spirituality” – a way to use one’s hands to
express spiritual discipline and reflect on the fact that we have been formed
in the image of God, the Creator, and are therefore called to exercise our “creative
expression” using each person’s unique abilities. Her nominator writes that “Marilyn’s
role as founder of our FCC prayer shawlminstry exemplifies an admirable
kindness and service for our community, especially those who are hurting or
sick. It provides an opportunity for many FCC members to engage themselves in
creative, artful labor, in recognition of those our culture often does no (recognize),
and to express our love and honor for those who receive these tokens of our
esteem.” Learn more about this nationwide movement to provide care and comfort
