INTERCESSORY PRAYER Intercessory Prayer - What is it?
Intercessory prayer is prayer for others. An intercessor is one who takes the place of another or pleads another's case. One study Bible defines intercession as "holy, believing, persevering prayer whereby someone pleads with God on behalf of another or others who desperately need God's intervention." At First Congregational Church we have a intercessory prayer chain where you can call or email your prayer request to Rev. Jacque Franklin (635-3549) or Jacque@fcucc.org. If you would like to be on the prayer chain, please contact Jacque Franklin.
FLOWER DELIVERY TEAM
Volunteers deliver the altar flowers from Sunday services, special services, Easter and Christmas. The flowers are taken to parishioners who are homebound, ill or hospitalized, have lost a loved one, and to those celebrating new life or other special occasions. New volunteers are needed and welcome. Please contact Ann Benson at 632-0568 or Rev. Jacque Franklin at 635-3549 if you are interested in joining. This ministry is an opportunity for parishioners to act as an important tie between the Church and those unable to attend services.
PRAYER SHAWL DELIVERY
How does one get a prayer shawl? A prayer shawl must be requested by another member of our faith community. The shawl is anonymously chosen from the supply of shawls knitted meditatively by the people in our church. They are blessed in our worship service and then lovingly delivered. The Associate Minister, Rev. Dr. Franklin, or anyone from our church can deliver the prayer shawl. It is delivered with the same intentional prayerfulness that it was created. Call Jacque at 635-3549 or Jacque@fcucc.org.
MEALS & TRANSPORTATION Please direct your care needs and requests for practical assistance or from First Congregational members to Rev. Dr. Jacque Franklin (635-3549).
Food: For bereaved individuals or families. For parishioners recovering from serious illness, surgery, or childbirth (usually meals for several days).
Transportation: Rides to and from church for elderly and/or disabled parishioners (in process, need coordinator) Rides to and from medical appointments for parishioners. (in process, need coordinator) This is a open volunteer opportunity for someone in our church to participate. Please contact Jacque Franklin at Jacque@fccucc.org if you are interested in being part of this ministry.
GOOD MOURNING GROUP Grief Support
Good Mourning meets every other month at First Congregational Church, 9:00-10:30am in the Gregg Library. Good Mourning is a time to bring heavy hearts & tears that run close to the surface into a group who understands all too well this phenomena. Please come and share the burden of grief and, by so doing, make it a little lighter. Contact Chris Hall at christine_c_hall@msn.com.
HEALTH MINISTRY COMMITTEE
The Health Ministry Committee, still in its infancy, began its service to the congregation in 8/09. This eight-member committee focuses on the care of the spirit while promoting holistic health and preventing or minimizing illness/injury in our faith community. The scope of our work is fivefold: Parish Nursing, health education, liaison to community resources, support to families in healthcare crisis, and certain support services to members who are homebound, have had surgery, or who have a prolonged illness or injury.
The Committee started by asking the congregation’s input via a survey in January, 2010 and are now addressing the most desired services or health education classes/information. Flu shots will be offered again in October. Healthy Eating classes have been held during Lent and over the summer and will continue in the fall. Articles have been written regularly in the Communicator. Recommended books have either been bought for the library or will be added to that collection. CPR/AED training has been held for the church leadership and designated first responders. We have sought and received some contributions for the purchase of an AED. First aid kits have been bought and placed in strategic locations. Two classes in risk factors and preventive measures for cardiovascular disease were held in February and March, 2011.
The Innovations In Aging Collaborative and First
Congregational Church will present a program on May 14 at the Colorado Springs Senior
Center (1514 North
Hancock) for parishioners seeking information on senior/retirement communities
and healthcare facilities. The forum will offer information on senior
living options that help individuals and families prepare for issues of aging
and avoid crisis decision-making. Breakfast, lunch and materials will be
provided at no cost to participants. A wealth of helpful information
exists in our community; however, it is not always easy to find. Here’s a
chance to hear the experts and discuss the options. The program can accommodate
up to 15 participants. Please make a reservation no later than May 12.
Contact Nancy Lippincott at nlppnctt@aol.com so we will know the count". Contact for the Health Ministry is Nancy Lippincott RN BSN, Parrish Nurse (719) 332-5528
